The Caroline Daigneault Diabetes Shkaabe Award

In honour of Caroline Daigneault, the National Indigenous Diabetes Association is announcing the annual Caroline Daigneault Diabetes Shkaabe Award to recognize individuals and/or communities that are leading the way in diabetes prevention and management for their Peoples.

The National Indigenous Diabetes Association is eternally grateful to Caroline for her contributions to our organization. Caroline shared her knowledge and wisdom with respect, love, and kindness. Caroline volunteered her time in her community to bring Elders and others together to share about their experiences with diabetes and to help people on their journeys.

Call for Nominations

National Indigenous Diabetes Association invites you to nominate deserving individuals or community groups for the 2022 Caroline Daigneault Diabetes Shkaabe Award.

The Award

The National Indigenous Diabetes Association established this award to:

  • honour the work, dedication and memory of Elder Caroline Daigneault;
  • honour individuals or communities whom have served as an inspiration to others through their persistent excellence, efforts, and positive impacts;
  • honour the efforts and dedication of outstanding people working in diabetes prevention and management in Indigenous communities; and
  • recognize and encourage the valuable services performed by these people throughout the country.

Who Can be Nominated?

Any person or community group that has been actively involved in promoting wellness, educating and raising awareness about diabetes prevention and management in their community or territory.

Individuals of any age are eligible.

Members are to submit nominations to NIDA by the designated date of each year using the nomination form found on the website.

Nominations should include:

A nominating statement of no more than two pages explaining how the nominee satisfies the award criteria. Please be specific, providing concrete examples.

Judging

A panel of NIDA Board Directors and Elders reviews all nominations and selects the award recipient. All nominators and candidates will be notified in writing of the judges’ decisions. The names of all nominees will be forwarded to the panel as selected for review. The panel will review all applications and chose a recipient and the name of the recipient will be presented to the Executive prior to the Annual General Assembly.

The Award Presentation

The award consists of a presentation gift that will be, starting in 2022, presented at the NIDA Annual General Assembly usually taking place in the fall of each year.

A Certificate of Recognition will be sent to each nominee.
